The folks at Cooper Cases are apparently quite proud of this tablet folio case: After all, it’s described as both “Infinite” and “Universal” in its lofty name. And in a few aspects, Cooper’s pride may be justified. Unfortunately, too many generic features (including the look) detract from the overall product.
AP Gear Companion iPad Sailcloth Sleeve in Grey
Some tablet tablet sleeves quirky designs to make you laugh, and if they don’t, there are others that can make you cry by failing to deliver on their promise for protection. The AP Gear Companion sleeve for iPad is a durable design that won’t play with your emotions.
Pros
- Fits any iPad
- Smart cover compatible
- Magnetic closure
- Water resistant
Cons
- Single-purpose use
- Tight squeeze with the Smart Cover
- A bit pricey
Overview
The Companion sleeve is like that shy, quiet friend who has your back, but mostly prefers to stay out of the way so you can be the center of attention. The first thing worth noting here is that the design will only fit the distinctive shape of an iPad, iPad 2, or New iPad 3, so it is not recommended for use with any other 10” brand tablet. Once inserted, there is no wiggle room for the iPad, which in turn, but it still fits well with a smart cover attached. There is no need to worry about this case bursting apart at the seams - its side edges are stiff and reinforced with dual-stitching.

| 3.0 | Functionality: Bonus points for the incorporated magnets here - really, who likes the sound of tearing Velcro? Or the trouble of snagging zippers? It’s a tight squeeze, yet still possible to fit an iPad with Smart Cover attached and/or for the user to plug in a set of ear phones and run the cable out from underneath the magnetic flap. |
| 4.5 | Protection: This design is a trustworthy protector against bumps, dirt, and scratches, and gets two extra thumbs up for shielding against rain, sleet and snow. The impressive build inspired me to perform a few waist high drop tests onto a wood floor, and the result was a quiet landing with no harm done to the tablet. Dependent on how high it falls and the hardness of the landing surface, the iPad could survive a couple accidental drops while enclosed here. |
| 5.0 | Quality: AP Gear solutions are handmade, but surely they must use a sewing machine, because the stitch work here is executed to perfection. The Companion sleeve is just as much about self-preservation as it is about preserving the tablet - the two will be buddies for life. |
| 4.5 | Value: $49 is rather pricey, but the high-performance materials and top notch durable construction will be worth every dollar spent. |
| 4.3 | Overall: Great In the end, this single-purpose design does nothing to discredit the AP Gear brand name that stands for “all-purpose”. The Companion iPad sleeve can blend in most anywhere and its material construction can perform in most types of weather. |
