Prior to this creation from Skech, I knew “Flipper” to be the star of an old American television program – he was a smart, lovable dolphin that kept his friends and habitat clear of dangerous criminals, thugs and other imposing threats. The newest “Flipper” is just as clever, able to protect and can also perform some tricks. It’s a tablet smart folio case with a magnetic cover that awakes your iPad 2 (and New iPad) when opened, puts it to sleep once closed, and transforms into a tablet stand for browsing, typing and viewing purposes.

Pros

  • Access to all buttons, ports and camera
  • Sleep/wakes your device
  • Stand for typing and viewing

Cons

  • Wobbly stand for browsing
  • Rubberized material feels a bit slick
  • Cover interior could use a soft lining

Overview

Although not named for the crime-fighting porpose I watched on TV, this magnetic tablet case has similar aspects and qualities, starting with its polycarbonate material, which has a slick, rubbery feel like dolphin skin. The fictional “Flipper” could always be counted on for his heroics, and this combo back protector and smart cover design can be relied upon to protect your entire device from the most common harms, including bumps, dings and scratches.

Skech chose the name to describe the case’s action, as its magnetic cover easily flips open and awakens the iPad 2 (and New iPad) from sleep in the process. Fold the lid into a triangular shape and its panels attach to create a tablet stand , offering one angle for typing. By flipping the case to an upright position, you’ll have another for browsing and viewing purposes.

Features

  • Thin design
  • Magnetic wake and sleep flap
  • Dual position stand
  • Access ports for buttons, headphone jack, speaker and rear camera
  • Full body protection

3.5Functionality:
The stand feature is a breeze to set-up, offering one typing and viewing angle, although in the later position it did wobble a bit when I touched the screen. The design makes it easy to pop your device in/out, and allows for clear access to all buttons, ports, jacks and rear-facing camera.
4.0Protection:
I wish the cover had a softer interior for improving screen protection and the user’s grip, but the magnets keep it securely closed, combining with the rear-shell to offer your device all around protection against everyday wear and tear. Like the dolphin, this “Flipper” won’t mind a few splashes of water as well.
4.5Quality:
The polycarbonate material didn’t exactly improve the grip of my tablet, and although the cover functions well, its edges look a little cheap and flimsy. But with a Skech engraving on the back, this case can be expected to prove durable and long lasting.
3.0Value:
Although there is room for improvement on quality, $55 is still a good value for a case that functions the same as an Apple Smart Cover and tablet protector case combined, but costs less than the price you’d most likely pay if you purchased these two accessories separately.
3.8Overall: Okay

Like that lovable dolphin character, this “Flipper” is smart, offers protection, and can perform a few tricks – a recommended case-solution that can provide all the basics you need for a good price.
