Who better to critique a tablet case for kids than, well, kids? In consulting with Suzie (6½ years old) and Silvia (just turned five), this father found the Speck Products iGuy iPad case to be quite a handy and successful item for young whiz kids – if only you can get the littler ones to, you know, stop playing with the iGuy itself.

Pros

  • Super-tough rubber protects well
  • Colorful and fun for kids
  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • Removal a bit difficult
  • No screen protector
  • No extra features
  • Strong smell

Overview

The Speck iGuy iPad case is immediately attractive to kids in its variety of eye-catching and playful colors. Presenting the iGuy with tablet embedded to my daughters, Silvia knew exactly what to do and began walking it around. Forget that the humanoid design of the iGuy provides big sturdy rubber legs to stand the tablet up solidly – Silvia was having too much fun.

She then put the iGuy through the second test, grabbing one of the arms as a handle and walking around with the tablet. Running around and swinging around the lightweight case caused absolutely no shifting to the iPad as it stayed firmly held by the rugged and tough shell of the iGuy.

But soon, Suzie had her demands. After all, there was Scooby Doo to watch! The iGuy makes it as a tablet stand nicely at a straight-up vertical angle to make video viewing easy – and possible for both to watch. Unfortunately, these young ones were a bit, let’s say enthusiastic, pressing the touchscreen just a bit too hard, making the iGuy fall backward. But no harm done, thanks to the solid rubber back protector part of this case.

Days later, the girls still love it. Suzie has named the iGuy “Ferko” (don’t ask), while Silvia simply fondly calls it “Crazy Little Man.” Someday, I may even get to use the iPad again...

4.5Functionality
With cutouts for all iPad controls and functions, the iGuy at minimum provides its users the basics. This freestanding case also does well in video viewing. Unfortunately, only one landscape mode is truly possible and the tablet won’t stand up to the more energetic pushing on the touchscreen.
4.5Protection
The rubber in the Speck Products iGuy case takes all the punishment children can hand out and slippage is nearly nonexistent (trust me, my daughters tried). The only significant drawback here is the lack of screen protector, but the overhanging rubber frame should prevent damage on most drops as well.
4.5Quality
Is this the best rubber used in a tablet case? It could well be. Okay, so the iGuy could smell better, but he resists scratching, dings and long drops while maintaining his sharp color through multiple cleanings. This high-grade material is truly the top choice for a kids’ tablet case.
5Value
At $39.95, the iGuy’s price tag may be a bit higher than what some parents had figured on spending for a kids’ tablet case (its still substantially cheaper than other rugged tablet cases). On the other hand, this one will surely last the lifetime of the tablet – or until they’re ready to move on to sports-themed cases or Hello Kitty models.
4.6Overall: Great

In the end, there’s very little negative to report on the Speck Products iGuy tablet case. For kids aged 2-9 years old, this one will surely be a winner. Just ask my daughters ... if you can get their attention.

"Perfect protection"

on 2013 Apr, 2 by Alan Thompson
My kid just loves the iGuy! And I’m also satisfied with the protection it offers: little Nicky drags it around, throws it on the floor and against the walls, and nothing happens to the iPad. If you want your tablet to survive your kid’s “treatment”, this is the case to go with.
