The Taiwanese tech industry blog Digitimes has revealed that Google may start production of a tablet designed to be a major competitor for Amazon Kindle Fire, instead of targeting Apple iPad. Digitime’s sources hint at a spring arrival date with a price hovering around $299.
However, these are only rumors at the moment, which stem from Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt’s comments to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera where he apparently suggested a Google tablet. What’s more, Digitime’s own reporting reputation has wavered recently after a series of failed predictions, as Steven Musil from CNET points out. Time will tell if any of this is true, but the rumors bring hype and excitement to the 2012 tablet wars.
