The Toshiba Excite aka AT200 tablet PC was unveiled in August 2011, with release date scheduled for Europe before the end of the year; no word yet on when the device might become available in North America.

Though not quite as loaded with hardware as its Thrive tablet , Toshiba has built the AT200 with lower weight (1.2 pounds/0.56 kilograms) and slimmer size (0.3”/0.8 centimeters in depth) in order to compete on the market of 10” tablets. In fact, these specs would make the Toshiba Excite lighter and thinner than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 , a device noted for outstanding qualities in these areas, and quite possibly earn the AT200 status as the lightest of all 10” tablets.

These measurements become even more impressive when considering that the AT200 tablet is also outfitted with micro USB, micro SD and micro HDMI ports – though no standard USB or SDXC card ports, as in the Toshiba Thrive. The Toshiba AT200 includes 1 GB of RAM together with another 64 GB in internal memory – a goodly amount of space.

From the sample model, we can note that the AT200’s capacitive touchscreen delivers high responsiveness and great quality for video viewing, though the OMAP 1.2 GHz microprocessor won’t help the AT200 be as speedy as other Toshiba products. On the plus side, however, Toshiba has dispensed with its in-house user interface design and will instead equip the AT200 with Android 3.2.
