With the Excite 10 LE, Toshiba bests the market-leading Apple iPad in a few areas, particularly size and weight, but falls short elsewhere, including with the disappointing 1280 x 800px display – really well too many denser displays exist for an electronics giant such as Toshiba to be settling for such a choice.

Definite plusses for the Toshiba Excite 10 LE are its remarkable dimensions. At just about 0.3” in thickness, this tablet is among the very thinnest in its 10” class, a measurement made even more exciting when considering that HDMI, Micro-USB and micro SD card ports are included. And the 1.12 pound weight significantly improves upon the iPad and most other 10” tablets. Pricing is also competitive at about $400 for the 32 GB version.

And that display. The Excite 10 LE tablet is powered by a 1.2 GHz TI OMAP 4430 dual-core processor, which implies that you know what’s coming: Slow speeds on more complicated software processing. Quite an unfortunate little detail that is, as the Corning Gorilla glass makes things look great out of the box – again, how did Toshiba manage to employ such a durable material at this low weight?

Users looking for high totability will be impressed by the Toshiba Excite 10 LE, but beyond the carrying-around, better overall performance is not difficult to find among the 10” tablet lot.
